The Panthers have created some more cap room ahead of Week 1.
Per Spotrac, they have restructured defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton’s contract. They converted $12.2 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, which opened up $9.7 million in cap space for the coming season.
Wharton is in the second season of a three-year deal and the team added three void years to further spread out the remaining cap hit in coming seasons.
While Wharton is helping the team’s salary cap situation, he won’t be helping them against the Bears on Sunday. Wharton had neck surgery this offseason and is on the physically unable to perform list to open the regular season.
